ELL

Just passing along some information regarding ELL and reporting:
When do we check ESL box?
- Only check ESL box for any ELL (STEP 1 and 2 and sometimes STEP 3) who is receiving ELL modifications to their programming (some or all grade level curriculum expectations are altered or simplified to meet the child's needs)
therefore: if modifications are put in place for the students, then the grade should reflect the student level of achievement based on modified expectations.
See attachment regarding providing a level grade when the curriculum is modified.

ELL Reporting Procedures for English Language Learners Kindergarten to Grade 8 (click here)

Do we check off ESL box if we are only providing accommodations for the ELL (grade level expectations are not altered: providing fewer questions, scribing, providing scaffolds...)
- NO, the box is not checked off
therefore: if accommodations are being made then the grade should reflect the student level of achievement.
Do we write the "statement": Achievement is based on expectations modified from the curriculum expectations...to support English Language learning needs"
- No, the statement does not need to be written as part of the subject comment, checking the ESL box indicates modifications are occurring.
Do we have to indicate what STEP the student is for Oral, Reading and Writing on the report card:
-NO, this is recorded by me on PowerSchool
JK/KP KINDERGARTEN ELLS:
If the developmental keys are NT/ BD for the ELL due to their language proficiency--then please include this in your Language Arts comment.
"___________________ continues to develop his/her level of English
proficiency."

Thanks,
